When it just doesn’t connect.

I finished a book last night and I have to tell you it was a hard slog. If I hadn’t been reading it on my e-reader I’m sure I would have thrown it against the wall or I wouldn’t have stopped reading it.

I was really disappointed as it was from one of my favourite authors.  I’m not going to mention the name of the book or the author, out of respect for them. I’d never do that 🙂

Anyway I have to admit I’ve noticed a definite shift in this author’s work over the past couple of years. Each scenario plays out pretty much the same. I could safely predict what was going to happen and when it was going to happen.  You might say, well that’s normal with romance books and to a certain degree it does. But most authors I read don’t use pretty much the same modus operandi each time.

What really annoyed me was the stilted conversation between the hero and heroine. He would answer questions with one word and she would always be antagonistic towards him, until about 3/4 through the book where she has the epiphany that she does really love him. He would always seem to know what she was thinking. I like that sometimes but not with every conversation they had. It was almost a sarcastic tone he used with her. I got no sense of connection between them during conversations.  I felt the heroine had more of a connection with the hero’s mother. Their conversations meant something and gave the story meaning.

So would I read this author again – I’m in two minds.  I might go and look at an excerpt now instead of just doing an automatic buy. I’m a bit sad that it has come to this.

It's a sad thing that, as a writer, the more you read the more you expect from other authors. There's lots of emerging authors out there – why not give one of them a go for your next purchase.

Oh I do Lesley, on my E-Reader and in my basket of books I have quite a few new authors. And out of the last 5 books I've read 3 have been new authors 🙂 See my next blog 🙂
