When it does connect!!

So my last post was about how I didn’t connect with the book and the way the author had changed. Well let me just say that this book I’ve just finished had me connected from page 1.

I started this book after I’d finished the disappointing one. It was late Thursday night (almost midnight) and I didn’t want to go to sleep. So I tossed up whether to start a book on the e-reader or delve into my basket for paperbacks. I chose the basket.  On top of the basket was a book I had been given when I went to the RWA West Houston Chapter for the first time. Now this author writes historical novels – I don’t do historical novels. This book is also an inspirational novel – I don’t do that genre either. But when I was going through my books to donate to the school garage sale I had this in my hand to pop in the box – I’m ashamed now to admit that :). Well I opened the first page and read the first paragraph. It promptly went back into my basket. Yep it piqued my interest straight away.

So I started it and decided that if I didn’t put it down I’d never get any sleep. Well I finished it Saturday afternoon – I flew through the last 100 pages.  I will definitely look to see if I can find more books by this author.

I had my eyes opened and my, I guess you could say, prejudices reversed. It was an enjoyable read the characters were so interesting and so was the fact some of the characters in the book were in fact ‘real’ people of that time.  The author did an incredible amount of research and it showed.  But the hero and heroine we front and centre and the minor characters didn’t interfere or take anything away from the two leading people. Whether it’s category or single title, a connection is needed very early on for the reader to stay with you, invest their time in the story.

Do yourself a favour and seek out books written by “Deeanne Gist” particularly “A Bride in the Bargain”. You’ll spend an enjoyable few days or maybe one day lost in the magic of her words. I know I will be looking for more from her.
